What does "profitable" actually mean here?

Profitability is net margin, not gross revenue. A miner can earn KAS every day and still lose money if electricity costs more than the coins are worth. The pool fee is a smaller lever than power, but it is pure margin: every basis point the pool keeps is revenue you never see, and it applies whether KAS is up or down. Most Kaspa pools charge 0.9–1% with no rebate.
